Egg Drop Container Challenge

Challenge: Package a raw egg in recycled material, drop it from 2 meters onto a hard surface and make sure the egg doesn't break.
Materials
  • 1 raw egg
  • recycled, reused materials that can be shaped by hand or manipulated with tools that are listed below
Fastening Material (new)

Tools

  • pliers
  • side-cutters
  • stapler
Time

Preparation
  • You can try out different designs at home to test how good your packaging is. Wrap your egg in a baggy so that if it does break, you can still use the egg after straining out the eggshells. (You don't want to be wasting good food :-)
  • The packaging should be such so that you can make it from "scratch" at school.
During The Official Design Challenge Hour
  • You may have 2 tries if you wish.
  • The egg must be removed from the packaging without breaking the egg. In other words it can't be so taped up it can't be removed from the packaging without breaking the egg.
  • If there is a tie (namely more than one student designs packaging that protects the egg well), then the entries will be judged in one of these categories:
    • lightest packaging (weight)
    • smallest volume (outside dimensions)
    • simplistic, elegant design
    • shortest package assembly time
    • aesthetic appeal - attractive use of junk material
