Agendas
Agendas will be collected & checked daily,
during HR - HomeRoom.
Students are expected to have their Agenda at school every day.
Items are written on the board by the teacher daily & all students are
expected to copy down every item.
If an item is already completed, the student checks it off.
If there is a line beside an item, parent signature of initials are expected.
This means that the student must show or do something.
If a line is circled, then it means that the parent signature was missing when
the Agenda was checked.
INC ________ indicates that work was incomplete and the parent needs to be
informed of this.
Parents are encouraged to write notes in the Agenda to their children or the
teacher. Students are also encouraged to write personal reminders to themselves.
Reading
Students are expected to read novels for about 2 ½ hours a week
at home (½ hr. daily). Students are expected to have a novel in their
desk at all times & reading is the preferred activity when other scheduled
work is completed. SQUIRT (Sustained Quiet Uninterrupted Independent Reading Time) is
scheduled several times a week in 15 to 20 minute blocks of time.
Reading Log
Students are expected to read at least 20 novels during the
year (including novels read at home). For each novel read, a Reading Log entry
needs to be completed and a Novel Summary needs to be written. Reading Logs
will be collected the first week of each month.
Home Journals
Students will write a 3 paragraph letter to their parents
every Wednesday in their Home Journal. These letters are RBNE (Read But Not Edited)
by the teacher prior to going home. Parents are asked to read the letters and
write a letter back by the following Tuesday so that the Journal can be back at
school by Wednesday.
Spelling
There will be weekly spelling lists & assignments. On Monday,
the Pre-Test is given and class time is given for the
assignment. Work that is not completed needs to be taken home. On Friday
the assignment is taken up in class. The Test is also given on
Friday.
SSQ - Spelling Skills Quizzes
These are weekly 1 page assignments related to language & grammar. SSQ is
taken up every Thursay.
Talk About: (term 1 & 2)
Students are expected to get up
in front of the class & speak on a topic of their choice for 1 to 2 minutes
about every other week.
Things may be brought to school on those days to be shown to the class. Each
student has an assigned day – Monday to Friday. When other
major oral presentations occur, Talk About is cancelled for the week.
Number Facts: (term 1 & 2)
Daily number fact drills are given every day (MMM – Mad Minute Math). Even if all the
questions are not completed during the 1 minute allotted, students are expected
to complete all questions. On the following Monday, duo-tangs are
checked to see that the work is completed.
Problem Solving
On-going weekly problem solving activities will be given
to students. Every Tuesday, assignments from the last week will be
taken up and new strategies for the following week will be taught. Work that is
not completed in class on that day is expected to be completed at home for the
following Tuesday.
Phys. Ed.
Attempts
will be made to have 2 physical activity periods per week by making use of the
outdoors if the schedule does not give us access to the gym. Extra outdoor
physical activities occur through tree planting, skating, snow shoeing and track
& field. At certain times of the year, gym time will be used for Drama & Dance.
Students must wear indoor shoes to participate. As well students are expected to
change into shorts & a T-shirt for gym class. Track pants can be substituted for
shorts. Gym clothes should be kept in a cloth bag at the back of the classroom.
