Suggested Supplies that need to be at School

2 pencils Most notebooks must be written in pencil. Mechanical pencils are discouraged unless student is responsible enough to take care of leads. Pencils with quality erasers on tips encouraged.
eraser Art or "pink pearl" eraser recommended.
2 pens Used for writing final published works and for marking work. Students may not bring "white-out" to school. Students should use black or blue for writing. Other colours are OK for marking.
pencil sharpener The one with an attached container to catch the shavings is preferred.
ruler 30 cm ruler with millimeters required. May be borrowed from school.
calculator Small inexpensive calculator with % function needed.
scissors Small pair of scissors required.
glue Glue stick or small bottle of glue.
highlighter To be used in learning how to focus on main ideas and in research.
lined paper Small quantity of lined paper kept in a duo-tang in the desk is OK. Students are asked to donate 250 sheets at the beginning of the year. Otherwise provided by the school.
pencil crayons Blue, red, brown and green needed for mapping. Other colours desirable for illustrations & diagrams.
markers Water based markers are optional. No permanent markers allowed with the exception of a fine tipped black felt pen for artistic signatures.
pencil case Soft sided, zippered pencil cases are preferred. Large box-like cases don't fit in already crowded desks.
10 duo-tangs Students require 10 duo-tangs at the start of the year. A couple of extra ones would be good in order to submit research notes for projects. There is no room for binders in student desks. They must be kept at home.
tissues Each student is asked to donate 2 boxes of tissues at the beginning of the year to the class. These are used over the course of the year.
indoor gym shoes Gym shoes with non-marking soles are need for Phys. Ed. These can be kept at school in case regular shoes get dirty or wet. An extra pair of socks is advisable at certain times of the year. If students do not have gym shoes, they will be required to participate in bare feet.
water bottle Students may have a water bottle at the back of the room. Its use should not be distracting to others. Water bottles need to be labeled. They may only contain water.

Some things that are suggested for at home:

dictionary To assist in self-editing. Parents should feel free to give the first 3 letters of any word as a boost.
atlas A simple atlas with a section on Canada is advisable.
public library card Students should have their own library card to teach responsibility and independence. Students need to use the public library to find research materials as well as novels.
work place Students need a regular place where school work can be done in the home.
calendar A summary of due dates & special events would help the student plan work at home.
